About DOLE

The Department of Language Education (DLE) was established in 2018. However, its inception dates back to 2000, when the School of Education launched the Postgraduate Diploma in Education in English Language Teaching (PGDE in ELT), the first program in English language education. The School subsequently introduced M Ed in ELT (One-year program) in 2003, M ED in ELT (Two-year program) in 2004, M Phil in English Language Education in 2013, B Ed in Chinese language Teaching in 2016, PhD in English Language Education in 2020, Master in Writing and Literacy Studies (MWALS) (Two-year program) in 2022, PGDE in Nepalbhasha Teaching (PGDE-NBT) (one-year program) in 2025, PGDE in Tamang Language Teaching  (PGDE-TLT) (one-year program) in 2025, PGDE in Yakthung (Limbu) Language Teaching  (PGDE-YLT) (one-year program) in 2026, and PGDE in Maithili Language Teaching (PGDE-MLT) (one-year program) in 2026.

The DLE aims to produce human resources in language education in order to contribute to language teaching, language teacher education, research and language education policy. The Department also networks widely with similar departments and institutions to create synergy in bringing about timely changes in the field of language learning and education.

DLE also offers short-term teacher training, organizes conferences, seminars and workshops on current and pertinent issues related to language education, and undertakes research and publishes quality reports, book chapters, and journal papers. The Department has made a significant contribution to the expansion of language-related programs, focusing on International and local indigenous languages. Currently, we have Doctoral, Master of Philosophy and Master's programs in English Language Education. We also teach indigenous languages at PGDE level and we have included English and Chinese in our undergraduate programs. 

The graduates of DLE are engaged in teaching, teacher education, educational management, government and NGO / INGO sectors, curriculum and material development, and international missions. The performance of most of them is reported to be significantly different in these sectors.
